The final halo effect of reverse channel letters is strongly affected by the installation wall. Wall color, surface texture, reflectivity, and mounting distance all influence how wide, soft, and visible the rear glow appears after installation.
| Wall Surface | Halo Effect | Recommendation |
|---|---|---|
| White or light-colored wall | Strongest and cleanest halo reflection | Best choice for clear and uniform halo lighting. |
| Light stone or marble wall | Soft, premium, and architectural glow | Ideal for hotels, luxury retail, lobbies, and corporate walls. |
| Dark wall | Halo effect becomes weaker and less visible | Use higher LED brightness, proper standoff distance, or a lighter backer panel. |
| Rough concrete or brick wall | Halo may appear broken or uneven | Test the wall surface first or use a clear backer panel to improve light distribution. |
| Wood or textured wall | Warm atmosphere but less clean halo edge | Suitable for restaurants, bars, and interior branding projects. |
| Glass facade | Reflection can be complex and less controlled | Use special mounting hardware, raceway mounting, or backer panel support. |
| Distance From Wall | Lighting Result | Best Use |
|---|---|---|
| Less than 10mm | Very narrow halo effect | Flush or curtain wall installations |
| 20–30mm | Soft and controlled halo glow | Interior logo walls and reception signs |
| 30–50mm | Standard visible halo effect | Outdoor storefronts, hotels, and commercial facades |
| Over 50mm | Wider glow but possible light spread | Large letters or special architectural effects |
For the best result, the wall surface should be reviewed before production. A light, smooth, and reflective background usually creates the most uniform halo effect, while dark or rough surfaces may require stronger LEDs, adjusted spacing, or a supporting backer panel.
Reverse channel letters can be produced with an open-back structure or a transparent backer structure. The right choice depends on the installation environment, maintenance requirements, dust protection, and desired halo lighting effect.
| Back Structure | Best For | Main Advantage | Consideration |
|---|---|---|---|
| Open Back Reverse Letters | Indoor walls, clean environments, short-distance viewing | Direct rear light output and strong halo effect | More exposed to dust, insects, and wall conditions |
| Clear Acrylic / PC Backer | Outdoor signs, hotels, retail stores, long-term commercial projects | Helps protect LEDs from dust, insects, and debris | Requires good material transparency and clean sealing |
| Crystal Backer | Premium interior branding, luxury stores, reception walls | Creates a cleaner edge and more refined visual depth | Higher material and processing requirements |
| Full Sealed Back Structure | Outdoor facades and harsh environments | Better protection for long-term use | Needs proper waterproof wiring and heat management |
For indoor decorative walls, open-back reverse letters can create a clean and direct halo effect. For outdoor storefronts, hotels, shopping centers, or projects where maintenance access is limited, a clear backer or sealed rear structure is usually the safer choice to ensure longevity and consistent illumination.
We engineer out the common failures found in standard LED sign manufacturing. Here is how PDL's factory expertise protects your projects.
Uneven wall textures, incorrect mounting distance, or poor installation methods can cause distorted, weak, or inconsistent halo illumination.
PDL uses pre-calculated stand-off spacers and precision mounting templates to maintain the ideal projection distance, ensuring a smooth, uniform halo effect across every letter.
Traditional reverse channel letters often leave open cavities behind the letters, allowing dust, insects, and debris to accumulate over time, reducing light output and creating visible dark spots.
Our transparent polycarbonate backer system fully seals the LED cavity while maintaining maximum light transmission.
Problem
Poor welding and insufficient internal shielding can cause unwanted light leakage from edges and seams, damaging the premium reverse-lit appearance.
PDL Solution
Precision laser welding combined with internal light-blocking coatings ensures that all illumination is directed exclusively toward the rear halo area.

Open the box, pick out the yellow 1:1 Kraft paper and tile it on the floor. Then place the LED letters into the corresponding graphical in the Kraft paper. Pick out the transformer after confirm the LED letters, then read the installation carefully. Then get through the transformer and test the LED letters.
Adhesive the Kraft paper to the place you want to installed. (Manuscript was marked mounting screw holes and outlet holes).
Use self-tapping screws twist into 3/4 in the right place. Then use 8mm diameter brick to dig the outlet holes.
Give some glass cement and the hot melt adhesive tape in the back of the LED letters, put out the outlet from the outlet holes. Then hang in the corresponding screw clamping compaction (need to torn the corresponding Kraft paper before installation). Play little glass cement in the inconspicuous place of LED letters and the plate.
As shown, 220V connect transformer Input or "L""N", output 12V (anode ,+,red) (cathode, -, black blue ) and the black blue wiring are connected LED letters outlet.
Transformer must be installed in a dry and well ventilated place.
LED letters are the 12V low-voltage electrical appliances. If there are many lights cascade it will make the lights dark, so we need the transformer V+,V- or COM in parallel the LED letters.
Do not connect the 220V directly without using transformer!!!
Channel Letters are named after their three-dimensional enclosed structure, often referred to as a "light channel." Unlike flat signs, each letter is fabricated with a face, side returns, and backing to create an internal cavity that houses LED modules and wiring systems. This enclosed channel not only protects electrical components from dust, moisture, and weather exposure but also helps control light distribution, ensuring brighter, cleaner, and more professional illumination. The result is a durable signage solution widely used for commercial branding, storefronts, and architectural applications.
Industrial front-lit channel letters use a modular multi-layer construction designed for strength, weather resistance, and uniform illumination. Each component works together to create a reliable illuminated sign suitable for long-term indoor and outdoor applications.
High-transparency acrylic face designed to diffuse LED light evenly and eliminate hotspots.
Precision CNC-bent aluminum sidewalls that increase structural rigidity while preventing side light leakage.
Custom locking trim secures the face and returns while providing waterproof and dustproof protection.
Durable backing panel supports the structure and serves as the mounting surface for high-efficiency LED modules.
Unlike front-lit signage, Reverse Channel Letters project light backward to create a sophisticated halo lighting effect. This reverse illumination system is commonly used for premium branding environments where aesthetics and architectural integration are priorities.
Fabricated from stainless steel, galvanized steel, aluminum, brass, or copper to create a seamless and durable exterior.
LED modules project light toward the mounting surface, creating a soft illuminated halo around the letters.
Precision spacers maintain the ideal distance between the letters and the wall to achieve a consistent halo effect.
Every Reverse Channel Letters project is fully customized, meaning there is no fixed standard price. Project costs are determined by several manufacturing and engineering factors that directly affect material usage, labor requirements, and production complexity.
Larger letters require more material, stronger internal structures, and additional fabrication time.
Special finishes such as brushed gold, mirror rose gold, titanium black, PVDF coating, and custom Pantone color matching increase production complexity.
Standard front-lit signs are generally more economical, while reverse halo-lit, front & reverse lit, RGB, and programmable lighting systems require additional components and assembly.
Thin strokes, script fonts, sharp corners, and intricate logos demand more CNC processing, welding, and LED placement, increasing manufacturing time.
Send us your vector files or architectural drawings. Our engineering team will provide a comprehensive structural analysis and quotation.
